When I started mining Bitcoin back in 2018, I was in a similar position as you—just a few computers, plenty of curiosity, and a dream. Let me break this down into what worked for me and how you can make the most of your setup.
Starting Small
I began with three gaming rigs I already owned. Each had decent GPUs (NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti cards), and I repurposed them for mining. While Bitcoin itself wasn’t GPU-mineable, I mined altcoins like Ethereum, which were profitable at the time. Once I earned enough ETH, I converted it to Bitcoin. On average, I was pulling in about $300–$500 per month per rig after covering electricity costs—though you’ve got a significant advantage since you’re not paying for power.
The Game-Changer: Mining Pools
Instead of going solo, I joined mining pools to combine my hash rate with thousands of other miners, increasing my chances of earning Bitcoin. Even with just a few computers, being in a pool allowed me to see consistent, albeit smaller, payouts. This is one of the best ways to make the most of limited resources and still stay competitive.
Cloud Mining Experiment
I also dabbled in cloud mining with providers like Genesis Mining. It was appealing because I didn’t need to manage hardware or worry about downtime. However, profits were much smaller, and returns fluctuated with Bitcoin prices and mining difficulty. I’d recommend being cautious here—calculate the ROI carefully, as many providers overpromise. It’s not as lucrative as it was in the earlier days, but it can be a hassle-free supplement.
Scaling Up: Investing in ASICs
When my earnings hit around $15,000, I reinvested into proper mining equipment—ASIC miners. I started with the Antminer S9, which was a beast in its time, and later upgraded to the Antminer S19 Pro (currently one of the best). These machines cost me around $100,000 in total, but they were game-changers.
With these ASICs, my setup could mine about 1 BTC every 1-2 months at its peak, especially during the 2021 bull market. Over the years, they paid for themselves multiple times over, and the profits were life-changing.
Your Playbook
Use Your Computers: Configure your rigs for GPU mining (start with coins like Kaspa, Monero, or other GPU-mineable ones) and convert the earnings into Bitcoin.
Join a Mining Pool: Look into pools that align with the coins you’re mining to maximize payouts. This levels the playing field for smaller setups like yours.
Reinvest Earnings: Once you see results, reinvest in ASIC miners. The Bitmain Antminer S19 Pro or Whatsminer M30S++ are currently some of the best options, but you’ll need to run the numbers to see if they’re profitable for you.
Track Your Progress: Mining calculators like WhatToMine or NiceHash can give you a sense of potential earnings before investing in more hardware.
Mining Bitcoin isn’t just a technical process—it’s a commitment to building something meaningful. When I started, it felt small, just a few computers humming away. But each rig, each coin mined, was a step toward something bigger. Your free electricity is a gift—pair it with focus and reinvest smartly. What starts as a modest setup could grow into a powerful engine of opportunity. Keep mining, keep building—Bitcoin rewards those who stay the course.
