Pros And Cons Of Front Wheel Drive FWD In Salon Cars
No driveshaft, enabling a transverse motor and a smaller overall drivetrain package. If you’re comparing cars of the same length, FWD leaves more room for people and cargo.
FWD usually has less driveline power loss. More of the engine’s output makes it to the driving wheels.
FWD puts most of the weight over the driving wheels, which in low-acceleration scenarios can help with traction.
In all other respects, FWD is basically shit.
Forcing the front tires to do, simultaneously, the work of acceleration and cornering reduces the amount of each that can be done at the same time.
FWD severely limits the amount of power that the car can deploy, as the weight will transfer off the front wheels and onto the rears in proportion to the rate of acceleration.
It makes cars fundamentally nose-heavy and prone to understeer. It forces the front tires to work harder and the rear tires to carry less of the work of holding the car on its turning line. That reduces the maximum cornering grip that you can have compared to an RWD car of similar weight and tire size.
All the steering geometry that needs to be dialed in to minimize torque steer under power (the tendency of a front-wheel drive car to turn its front wheels in some direction as a residual effect of the acceleration force) also reduces steering feel.
FWD is a reasonable compromise for cheap, low-powered cars. Manufacturers have been very good at masking the disadvantages of FWD in sporty cars under about 300 horsepower. But for performance cars, and cars that aspire to pleasant dynamics, RWD is the right starting point.
Special mention is warranted for rear-biased all-wheel drive systems. With modern computer-controlled differentials to allocate torque among the car’s four wheels, these systems can build on the fundamental advantages of RWD, while adding traction advantages under acceleration and in cornering.
