In a dramatic turn of events, South Korea’s National Assembly has voted to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, intensifying the political turmoil gripping the nation.
The impeachment vote, held on Friday, saw 192 lawmakers in favor, surpassing the 151-vote threshold, despite strong objections from the ruling People Power Party (PPP). Several PPP members boycotted the session, branding it an “abuse of power.”
The move comes just weeks after the assembly impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his controversial December 3rd declaration of martial law, which was swiftly rescinded.
With this vote, Han is set to step aside from his acting presidential duties once formally notified. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to take over as interim leader.
After the vote, Han expressed, "I respect the decision of the National Assembly and will await the ruling of the Constitutional Court. To prevent further chaos, I will step back from my duties."
The impeachment process is not over, however. The Constitutional Court must decide within 180 days whether to uphold the motion. Until then, Han’s future hangs in the balance.
